Free Antivirus vs Paid Antivirus

What’s the best antivirus?

Being a home user, free antivirus is an attractive option. Especially with so many good ones. But do you actually get better protection if you pay for it?
If you’re talking strictly antivirus, then typically no. It’s not common practice for companies to give you weaker protection in their free versions. In most cases, the free antivirus protection is just as good as their pay-for version.
But I would argue that the companies who offer only a pay-for version will typically be better than those that offer a free one, simply because it takes a lot of resources to keep up with the changing landscape. And selling antivirus is how they support their research.

Backup Computer Key

As you are aware, we here at Bridge PC Repair are always harping on about the importance of having a good back-up system in place to back up your computer files and data.

Because we cannot avail of backing up to the cloud (rural broadband is still stuck in the Stone Age), we have tried and tested numerous ways to see which back-up is the most straightforward and which can be monitored by us off-site. We are now using software that creates a back up to a designated NAS Drive and emails us here in Bridge PC Repair a fully detailed report EVERY time a backup is done.

Skype

Skype is a fantastic free computer program that enables people to speak to each other for free over the internet. It’s also possible to use Skype to make cheap calls to a land-line or mobile telephone. Our step-by-step guides will have you up and running on Skype in no time.

What is Skype?

Skype is a computer program that offers a VoIP (‘Voice over Internet Protocol’) service. This lets you make calls to people all over the world via your computers or telephone and have text chats. Calls between computers are usually free, and other Skype calls are generally inexpensive. With more than 650 million registered users, Skype is by far the most popular VoIP service, and ‘skyping’ is now almost as familiar a term as ‘googling’.

Irishoutages.com; a simple website that keeps you informed.irish outages

Ever been stuck at home when your network goes? You’re stuck there wondering ‘Is the network down or is it just me’? Rather than relying on your family or friends to confirm or deny that it’s ‘just you’, you need irishoutages.com. It’s a very simple and striaghtforward website that foregoes all the usual bells and whistles. Simply go to the site, look for the service you’re having issues with and see if other users are experiencing problems or not. It has all the major phone networks in Ireland, services like Netflix and the Playstation Network and TV services such as Sky and UPC among many others. naughty list

Each company has a page with lots of info including a graph displaying outages in the last 24 hours, most reported problems (as a %), resolved issues (%) and the users can also add comments, usually to vent their frustration. Probably the most important bit if info is the Live Outages Map. This is a map showing where all the reported outages are coming from. So, you can see in an instant if people in your area are reporting issues. There are also links to the companies help centres and social media platforms.

The website also maintains a kind of ‘naughty list’. This is the 10 companies with the most issues that week.

It’s a very handy website for quick checks but as the reports are user generated, the information should be taken with a grain of salt.

Data Backup. What it is and why you need to do it

Backup Computer Key

More and more often we are getting customers asking us about backing up files and what’s the best and safest way to do so. We know that your files are the most important thing on your computer and losing them would be a disaster!

Here is just a few examples of  recent customers that we have in with us with loss of data issues :

Customer 1:

A virus had found it’s way onto the customers machine and encrypted all the files on the machine so they couldn’t be opened! No anti-virus or malware scans could unlock the files. Luckily, a backup had been made only a few days before the infection, so while the machine had to be repaired, all the files could be restored from a backup so we had the machine back up and going like new in a matter of hours, all because a crucial back up had been made! Incidentally, at the the time of writing, there is still no known way of unlocking the files (Tesla Crypt or Cryptolocker – look it up if you don’t believe us!)

As many as 600 million phones vulnerable to remote code execution attack.

This vulnerability exists regardless of what keyboard a susceptible phone is configured to use. While SwiftKey is available as a third-party app for all Android phones, there’s no immediate indication they are vulnerable, since those updates are handled through the normal Google Play update mechanism.

For the time being, there’s little people with vulnerable phones can do to prevent attacks other than to avoid unsecured Wi-Fi networks. . There is no way to uninstall the underlying app, even when Galaxy owners use a different keyboard.
